New album on a new label, this time even a bit political

Alongside his work as a pianist and composer, Peter Breiner is an experienced political commentator. He has spent almost 30 years writing weekly columns for newspapers and magazines, as well as hosting radio and television talk shows.

Angry Piano Music for Desperate Times—or The Ill-Tempered Clavier includes twenty-four short preludes for solo piano. Careful listening reveals that some pieces, while not openly angry, are filled with sorrow or, at least, nostalgia. Breiner’s outlook, shaped by his observations of world events and his years living in the United States, gives the music a special poignancy. The names and feels of these preludes suggest that this musical ‘state of the union address’ is far from hopeful.

Peter Breiner—composer, conductor and pianist—has always been about mixing things up, blending genres and styles into one smooth and funky sound. Most of these preludes play around with bold harmonies—modern but never off-the-wall. Some are stripped back, letting the melody do the talking.

There’s a steady groove pulsing through, keeping things moving. Now and then, you’ll get a jolt of harsh dissonance, echoing the composer’s emotional battle. Still, even with all the grit and frustration, Breiner’s always searching for a bit of balance—offering rare flashes of calm, reflection, and beauty that cut through the gloom.

To capture the magnificent depth of Breiner's opus there was no choice but Yamaha CFX Grand Piano, engineered to deliver the most lifelike and detailed recording possible.

Like all Audiophile Society releases, Angry Piano Music is available as a high resolution download, in a single package containing DSD and 192/24 WAV file formats all in 3D Mega-Dimensional Sound™!

Released just ahead of World Piano Day, Scarlet is the second album in a trilogy, a quiet testament to the enduring appeal of the piano as a solo voice. Where Indigo turned inward, Scarlet moves closer to the surface.

Associated with warmth, intensity, and physical presence, the colour suggests energy and immediacy rather than stillness. Breiner's writing here is more direct, but never overstated—focused on pulse, gesture, and forward motion.

These pieces explore emotional heat without excess: moments of urgency, tenderness, and quiet insistence, articulated through clear textures and an unforced pianistic voice.

New album on Blue Cloud/Orchid Classics

Indigo is the first in a trilogy of solo piano albums with original music, each inspired by a colour and its emotional world.

In Indigo, Breiner explores the stillness and introspection of a colour often connected with contemplation, depth and spirituality. His music speaks with restraint and clarity, inviting reflection rather than demanding attention.

Like the colour itself—blending the calm of blue with the intensity of violet—these pieces traverse a rich emotional landscape. Breiner’s lyrical writing and gentle touch invite the listener into a world of intimate, unhurried, quiet beauty.

...Not since I heard Stokowski conduct his own orchestration at the Proms in 1966 have I been so impressed with an alternative to the Ravel. The Great Gate of Kiev brings the house down – this version makes it all the more regrettable that it was never built. The other works are equally effective...
